Baguette Gazette: Things I'm loving + January recap
Millennial-approved jeans, a must-hear podcast, wedding anniversary + more 🗞️
Hi friends! Welcome to the latest “Baguette Gazette”. If you’re new here, this is a monthly catchup where I share recommendations, personal updates, and what’s going on behind the recipes at TNB HQ.
“Severance” seems to have been totally overlooked when the first season premiered in 2022. Fast forward to season 2 now and it’s all anyone can talk about. I, too, have become obsessed. The drama/dark comedy follows a corporate team of four employees, each of whom have elected to undergo a procedure to separate their work memories from their life memories, effectively splitting into two people. It makes you question the idea of the work-life balance, but is mostly just highly entertaining.
Dr. Tim Spector, one of the leading voices in nutrition research today, is how I first got into the “30 plants per week” thing (i.e. one of my most popular newsletters to date!). I loved his recent interview on the Liz Moody podcast, where he chatted about the futility of counting calories, tips for improving your gut health and overall immunity, and our culture’s current obsession with protein. If you are confused about the state of the wellness world at the moment, I highly recommend giving it a listen!
You know what else is confusing at the moment? The state of denim. We’ve got barrel jeans (why, oh why?), we’ve got giant oversized jeans, low-rise jeans are back, and flared jeans are still here, too. For the fellow millennials who will always have a soft spot for skinny jeans, may I intro you to the Levi’s Wedgie Straight jean? This is a basic pair of comfortable jeans without any remarkable features. They are simply wearable and, day I say, normal…? The “Salsa Dark Stone” wash has become my daily go-to.
Happy February, friends! I hope January was good to you.
The past month has felt both drawn-out and over in the blink of an eye. I started out with great intentions and renewed energy to kick off 2025. Within days, though, I was hit with the flu in such a massive way that I don’t recall ever happening in the past. I could not get myself out of a horizontal position for almost a week, and didn’t have an appetite for anything other than toast and lots of cold, pulpy orange juice. (On the bright side, I got to watch a lot of TV.)
Did you get the flu this season? So many people I know had the exact same episode.
Anywho, all this to say that I’m a bit behind on my plans.
This month also marked 13 years of togetherness and two years of marriage for me and my husband, Rene. We celebrated in our usual way, by booking a staycation at the TWA Hotel. If you’re not familiar, it’s a former flight center at JFK airport for the now-defunct TWA airline, which was reopened as a [museum-esque] hotel in 2019.
Designed by Eero Saarinen, it’s an absolutely magical building that transports you back to 1962 (but, like, the good parts) - complete with chili-red velvet furnishings, space age-inspired curved lines, The Beatles and Frank Sinatra tunes trailing you at every turn, and a 60-year-old airplane that’s been converted to a bar. If you live in NYC or are ever passing through JFK, you’ve gotta see it for yourself.

Last but not least, in case you missed any of January’s recipes…

Just started Season 1 of Severance and love it already!
What a great staycation idea!! (Fellow Brooklynite here) Did the hotel have any dining options for those who are 100% plant based?
