While you’re probably well-acquainted with Polish pierogi, Ukrainian varenyky might be slightly less familiar. The good news is that these Eastern European halfmoon-shaped dumplings are almost the same (…almost).
I first published my family’s recipe on my site back in - gasp! - 2018. As you might imagine, my recipe writing and food photography skills have improved tremendously since, and the post was in desperate need of updating. With Easter right around the corner, I figured now would be the perfect time.
Apart from the actual recipe (it only calls for 5 ingredients, by the way), I’ve included plenty of tips, helpful step-by-step photos, freezing instructions, as well as some thoughts on the differences between the Polish and Ukrainian versions. (Since my husband is Polish, I have plenty of experience with both styles of dumpling!)
Lastly, my family’s traditional recipe is not vegan, but I’ve included info on swaps to make these completely plant-based. Head here for the full recipe!

Making these is still my Valentines Day tradition with my wife. 5 years strong.
